Close a site water balance
Record what came in, what is stored, what was consumed and what was reused, then let Slate check whether the books balance.
Before you start
- A facility and reporting year
- Meter readings or invoices for intake; consumption and reuse estimates
By the end you'll have
- A calculated balance with status Balanced, Review Required or Incomplete
- A site water-intensity figure, where your units allow
About 20 minutes.
1. Add sources first
Inside a new analysis, open Sources and add each: municipal, groundwater, surface, harvested rainwater, recycled purchased, trucked, seawater or other. Intake records point to a source, so this comes first.
2. Record intake
| Entry method | You enter | Also required |
|---|---|---|
| Metered or Manual Reading | Opening and Closing reading, meter unit | Source, date |
| Invoice Based or Calculated | A single Volume | Source, date |
| Estimated | A single Volume | Source, date, Estimation Notes |
Estimation Notes are mandatory for estimates so a bare guess is never mistaken for a measurement.
3. Storage, consumption, reuse and discharge
Storage
Name each tank, pond or reservoir, set capacity and water type, and record opening and closing inventory.
Consumption
Use category, volume, and optionally production volume with its unit. The production figure is what feeds intensity.
Reuse
The source stream (treated effluent, condensate, stormwater, greywater, blowdown), volume and, optionally, the receiving process.
Discharge
Effluent leaving the site: destination, treatment level and quality. Optional, but when present Slate checks your entered consumption against intake minus discharge.
4. Run the calculation
Click Run Calculation on the analysis header. Records are aggregated and the earlier balance result is overwritten. The view switches to Balance & Intensity.
| Status | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | Intake and storage account for consumption and reuse within tolerance | Done |
| Review Required | The gap exceeds the tolerance | Look for missing records or a wrong meter reading |
| Incomplete | Required inputs are missing | Add the missing section and recalculate |
Intensity needs one unit
If every consumption record shares a production unit, you will see site-level and per-category intensity. Mixed units blank the figure rather than average incompatible numbers.
