Journey · Scope 1 and 2
Report a year of fuel and electricity
The most common first job: a boiler, a few vehicles and the electricity bill for one site, entered by hand, calculated, and checked. About fifteen minutes.
Before you start
- An organisation, a facility and an active reporting year (see Your first 30 minutes)
- Last year's fuel quantities and the electricity meter or bill totals
By the end you'll have
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 figures for one site, each with its provenance
- Location-based and market-based electricity, side by side
About 15 minutes.
1. Add the fuel you burned
- 1
Open Emission Data
In the sidebar choose Emission Data. The first tab holds activity records; Calculated, Category and Charts sit beside it.
- 2
Add Activity → Stationary Combustion
Boilers, furnaces and generators belong here. Vehicles belong under Mobile Emission instead.
- 3
Fill in the fuel, quantity and unit
Use the unit on your invoice. Slate converts it, and refuses rather than guesses if the unit cannot be converted exactly (see Units and conversion).
- 4
Set Facility and Reporting Year, then save
Every form ends with these two fields. They decide which site and which analysis period the record belongs to.
Enter what you measured
Litres of diesel is better than a cost converted by hand. A record that carries the real quantity can be recalculated under any factor source or GWP set later.
2. Add company vehicles
Choose Add Activity → Mobile Emission. You can enter either the fuel used or the distance driven. Fuel is more accurate when you have it; distance needs a vehicle type so Slate can pick a per-kilometre factor.
Don't enter the same fuel twice
Fuel for a fleet vehicle is either fuel (Mobile Emission, by litre) or a distance estimate, never both. If a fuel card report and a mileage log cover the same vehicle, pick one.
3. Add electricity
- 1
Open Energy Data → Electricity
The Add Electricity Activity dialog opens.
- 2
Enter Quantity and Unit
A blue line shows the figure normalised to MWh as soon as both are set. Check it against your bill before saving.
- 3
Set the Transaction Date
Required, pre-filled with today. The date picks the factor edition that was current for the period.
- 4
Open Supplier & Utility if you have a contract
Naming the supplier is what lets the market-based figure use the supplier's own rate. Without it, a residual-mix fallback is used and the row says so.
4. Calculate
Use Calculate Emission on the Emission Data tab and Calculate Energy on Energy Data. Each runs as a background job: a toast confirms it started and another says how it finished. You can keep working while it runs.
Note
A record that cannot be calculated is not dropped. It stays in the Calculated tab with a red icon and the reason. Nothing disappears from a total without a trace.
5. Read the result
Green icon
Calculated. Click it to see the publisher's own row, the release used and the GWP values applied.
Amber icon
Calculated, but mixing your GWP set with a publisher's pre-calculated CO₂e. The detail panel says which.
Red icon
Not calculated. Click it for the exact reason and a suggested fix, then see Fix records that failed.
Electricity gives two rows per record: location-based (the grid where you are) and market-based (your contract). The Region Source column tells you how specific the grid figure is: a utility match, a state, a country average, or a last-resort national fallback.
