Emission Data
The largest module in Slate, 34 activity categories covering everything from a boiler burning diesel to a forest stand absorbing carbon. Here is every one of them, and how to work with the module day to day.
The four tabs
Emission Data for entering and reviewing activity records, Calculated for results (see Calculated Emissions & Errors), Category for a source-by-source breakdown, and Charts for the visual view.
Adding a record
- 1
Open Add Activity
On the Emission Data tab, use the Add Activity menu to pick one of the 34 categories below.
- 2
Fill in the category-specific fields
Each category opens its own form, a litre of diesel and a percentage of managed grazing land need genuinely different inputs, not a generic "quantity" box.
- 3
Set Facility and Reporting Year
Every form ends with the same two fields, which analysis period and site the record belongs to.
- 4
Or upload in bulk instead
For many records at once, use the Emission template under Upload Sources rather than adding them one by one, see Uploading Data.
Combustion & direct operations
Stationary Combustion
Fuel burned in fixed equipment, boilers, furnaces, generators.
Mobile Emission
Fuel burned in company vehicles and mobile machinery, by fuel used or distance driven.
Fugitive Emission
Refrigerant and gas leaks, five approaches from direct inventory to a screening estimate.
Fugitive Emissions, Coal Mining
Methane released from coal mining, by gassiness category and coal produced.
Fugitive Emissions, Oil & Natural Gas
Venting, flaring and leakage across oil and gas operations.
Operated Landfill (SWDS)
Methane from a landfill your organisation operates, modelled from its disposal history.
Industrial processes
Mineral Process
Process CO2 from cement, lime, glass and other carbonate use.
Chemical Process
Chemical industry process emissions, ammonia, soda ash, ethylene and more.
Metal Process
Iron, steel and other metal production process emissions.
Electronics Process
Fluorinated-gas emissions from semiconductor and electronics manufacture.
ODS Substitutes
Substitutes for ozone-depleting substances in foam, aerosols, solvents and fire protection.
Other Product Use
SF6 in electrical equipment, and N2O in medical and propellant use.
Non-Energy Product Use
Fuel used as a product rather than burned, lubricants, waxes, bitumen, solvents.
Agriculture
Livestock, Enteric Fermentation
Methane from digestion in livestock, by category and population.
Livestock, Manure Management
Emissions from how manure is stored and treated.
Lime & Urea Application
CO2 from lime and urea applied to agricultural soils.
Managed Soils, Nitrous Oxide
N2O from nitrogen applied to soils, grazing deposits, and drained organic soils.
Peat Extraction
CO2 and N2O from peat extraction, by climate zone and area.
Land use & carbon removals
Forest Land Carbon
Growth and removals on forest stands you've set up in Reporting Assets.
Settlement Trees
Biomass carbon in trees within settlement areas.
Land Use Conversion
The one-off biomass carbon change when land is converted from one use to another.
Flooded Land
Biomass carbon lost when land is flooded.
Harvested Wood Products
The carbon pool in wood products leaving your operations, tracked by inflow year.
Land Carbon Stock
Carbon stock change on a land parcel, tracked over a transition period.
Biological Treatment of Waste
On-site composting or anaerobic digestion.
Waste Incineration
On-site incineration or open burning, including the biogenic/fossil split for municipal waste.
Business travel & value chain
These are the Scope 3 categories, emissions that happen outside your direct operations but are still part of your footprint.
Business Travel
Flights, hotel stays and rail travel, with an optional radiative forcing adjustment for flights.
Freighting Goods
Goods moved by a third party, by distance and, where relevant, weight carried.
Managed Assets
Leased or operated vehicles not owned by your organisation.
Hotel Stay
Hotel nights, by country and room count.
Homeworking
Employees working from home, by FTE count and hours.
Material Use
Materials purchased by weight.
Purchased Goods & Services (Spend-Based)
Goods and services estimated from amount spent, when weight or unit data isn't available.
Waste Disposal
Waste sent for third-party treatment (a value-chain view, distinct from the Waste Data module).
Water Supply
Mains water delivered to your operations.
Water Treatment
Water returned to the sewer for treatment.
Running a calculation
Use Calculate Emission from the toolbar. This runs as a background job, a status toast confirms it has started, and a second toast confirms success or tells you what failed.
