Energy · Scope 1 and 2
On-site renewable generation
Electricity you generate yourself. Burning biomass for it still emits methane and nitrous oxide; wind and solar emit nothing on site; and either can be credited for the grid electricity it displaced.
On this page you'll learn
- What a biomass generator reports
- How the displaced-grid figure is costed
- Biogenic combustion
- Scope 1 (CH₄, N₂O); biogenic CO₂ outside the scopes
- Displaced grid
- Scope 2, negative, only if certificates are retained

Biogenic combustion (biomass only)
Costed as the fuel burned. CH₄ and N₂O are Scope 1; the CO₂ is reported outside the scopes.
Displaced grid
The grid emissions your generation avoided, as a negative Scope 2 figure, written only when you keep the renewable energy certificates. Sold certificates mean someone else claims the benefit.
The displaced grid factor comes from your organisation's own electricity source chain. It used to be EPA's US grid for everyone, so a UK organisation credited itself a US figure.
Watch out
Check how your reporting framework treats avoided emissions before netting the displaced-grid row against Scope 2. It's written as its own row so you can include or exclude it.
